Why are you still using tape to handle backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity?
Quick poll, how many of you still own a VCR and still use it regular? Most of you are using DVD / Blu-Ray or streaming it over the Internet. So why do you hold your data backups in the prisons of tape?
There are a great deal of solutions out there that are disk based and store your data in a secure spot in the "cloud." But why settle for just backup when anyone can provide that? How much better would a total solution that covered recent backups, disaster recovery and business continuity be for your company? Our solution at Strickland Networks is called TotalProtect because it keeps you protected in all of these three categories.
Backups
An initial backup is done and then continuous incrementals follow behind. The first destination of backups is to local storage at your site. That can be a Strickland Networks recommended NAS device or your own storage. The next destination for your data is off to our data center. There, the base image plus 1 month of your most recent data is kept.
Disaster Recovery
Let's assume worse case scenario, your entire office is destroyed by an act of nature. Strickland Networks can virtualize your most recent backup sent to our data center and help you make changes to allow you and your company to keep working remotely until a new physical location can be found for your office and new equipment purchased. Then we'll help transition back to the new hardware - all with minimal downtime.
Business Continuity
We've all heard the horror stories. Or maybe you've experienced it first hand. Your Server RAID has failed beyond repair, memory fails and the parts are out of stock, CPU's over heating ... whatever the issue, with TotalProtect you have the ability to turn your backups into a running virtual server or do a bare metal restore to new, dissimilar hardware. Your down time is now hours, not days.

AstraSync and Blackberry: Could it get any better?
Most all of my clients have either a BlackBerry or an iPhone. And almost all of them use Microsoft Exchange. This is not going to be a compare and contrast of who is better: the BlackBerry or the iPhone. Of couse the iPhone has ActiveSync integrated into the OS if you have the Enterprise Data Plan from your Wireless Provider. But now there is an equalizer, AstraSync enters the picture. AstraSync allows for you to synchronize your BlackBerry with your Exchange server without having to Install BlackBerry Enterprise Server or its free counterpart. AstraSync is like ActiveSync for the BlackBerry. It allows you to get and recieve Exchange Email, it updates your calendar and your contacts, you can flag messages and add attatchments. Pretty slick if you ask me. Also, what I hear is that you do not have to upgrade your phone to the Enterprise Data Plan to be able to use it. You can just get an unlimited data plan with your provider and away you go. The software costs $49 per year and is well worth it when you look at your savings from not having to have an Enterprise Data Plan. They also offer a free trial so that you can get your feet wet with to see if you really want it. Just use the link below to give it a try.

For syncing Exchange Outlook calendars and contacts to Gmail or Google apps domain, Gsyncit is my hero!
Here's the situation. I have a corporate email account on hosted exchange (Microsoft BPOS) and this is my work email, calendar, and contacts. I also have a Google apps domain for my personal email, calendar and contacts. I am a Google voice user and share my Google apps calendar with my wife. It is essential that these calendars and contacts are the same. I also have an iPhone that uses the exchange active sync connection and have to Goggle apps account setup for email only.
In the dark days of owning my blackberry, I tried to sync everything using the Google app on the phone. The results were disastrous. I had to undo the sync and restore from a backup. I also received errors all the time saying that the contacts and calendar were being synched by another program (Enterprise activated) and could not complete or a duplicate would be created.
This time around, I said that I need the application to reside my desktop to handle the issue. I searched and searched for something free to do this but could not find it. Add to the complexity that I am running office 2010 x64 edition. This only further narrowed my options.
After searching for a while, I found Gsyncit. (http://www.daveswebsite.com/software/gsync/). I read all about it and decided it was going to do everything I wanted it to. The app is $14.99, but very much so worth every penny. It took about 10 minutes to setup, and then I had some de-duplicating to do in contacts because the contacts between Google Apps domain and Outlook were already out of sync from me manually doing it when I remembered to. The de-duplication process to about 20 minutes. I have almost 300 contacts so not to bad.
But here's where I ended up after my $14.99 purchase and 30 minutes of work. All contacts and calendars are synched between the two accounts. If I make a change on my phone while I am on the road, it gets updated to corporate exchange. Then when I get back to the office, I load Outlook and all those changes are synched back to the Google side. I can also accept invitations from either of my accounts in any method I want. Then changes are synched later when Outlook is loaded on my desktop. Finally, since all my contacts are in sync, Goggle voice calls are very rarely unknown callers any more and I am no longer required to press 1 to accept the call of an unknown caller.
To be a complete nerd for a little bit, I have been trying to accomplish this for a very long time. I have seen Gsyncit for a while but really didn't want to pay $14.99. It has been a frustrating uphill battle to get these all in sync but now that they are, I feel major satisfaction.

SharePoint now available on your iPhone via Moshare
Microsoft is trying to kill public folders and make everyone go to SharePoint. As far as mobile access to SharePoint went, it was rather bad. Text only or a really small screen of the SharePoint page. Today I needed a way to make SharePoint pretty on an iPhone. Basically more elegant than the text only version. After some research, I found Moshare. http://moprise.com/
Right now the program is free to download and use via the App Store. I downloaded, installed and configured in under 10 minutes.
The drawback I see is that all information is read only. Which, let us be honest, if you are using your iPhone to access the site, do you really want to do more than read the info?

Not everything belongs in the cloud, but a large portion of businesses could benefit from moving email to the cloud.
My definition of CLOUD: The most over used buzz word of recent times. Putting that aside, some IT solutions just fit better with someone else hosting and maintaining that part of your business. Today, I am focusing on email.
Money: Yes, money talks. You can host email offsite for as little as $4.17 / month / user and a maximum of $10 / month / user. This isn't with some fly by night company either. We are talking about Microsoft and Google. Let's case study a company with 30 employees needing to upgrade their email server and say that the company replaces equipment precisely every 4 years. Option 1: Purchase new server and replace. Cost: Approximately $7500. (Server + Software + Licensing) . Option 2: Google apps domain: Yearly cost $1500 and total cost over 4 years is $6000 plus initial setup (man hours). Option 3: Microsoft hosted exchange: Yearly cost of $1800 and total cost over 4 years $7200 plus initial setup (man hours). Option 4: Microsoft BPOS: Yearly cost of $3600 and total cost over 4 years $14400 plus initial setup (man hours).
With the last 3 options, the best news is that after the first four years, your company is purchasing new equipment. You continue to pay your monthly fee and upgrades and improvements are added to your hosting solution in the cloud with out any intervention from your IT staff.
Maintenance: I am in no way saying the cloud is maintenance free, but I am saying that your IT staff will spend much less time maintaining the email hosted in the cloud once the initial setup is done. Think of this, the burden of backups, uptime, equipment and so on is now rolled up into a nominal fee you are paying.
Reliability: Service Level Agreement! What would it cost your company to place a redundant email system to a data center that offered very high speed internet and redundancy. I have recently priced this and $20k - $30k for hardware alone. Add on a $500 - $1500 monthly fee for the data center and internet. All this exercise was to get your SLA up to 99.9%. Or, when you buy a hosted solution, it comes with that SLA bundled in you low recurring fee.
Eat our own Dog Food: Not only do we recommend these solutions, but we use them too. Our corporate email is hosted with Microsoft BPOS. Personally, I have a Google apps domain for my family. I like both products and they both are reliable and quality products.
Ready to buy yet? If this peaked you're interest and you are ready to switch, give Strickland Networks a call. Not only can well help you chose the right solution, we can help you implement it as well.

Microsoft Professional's Start your Engines!
So okay, I wasn't able to sleep so I started reading some email. You kow trying to catch up on some inbox reading. I then came across my occasional MCP Flash email that told me about a new online game. It is a Microsoft Professional Quiz Show style game! I know sounds geeky, but I figu re if you are reading my blog you might be into this kind of thing. Anyways, You can use your passport login on Live ID whatever you have, and give it a go. If you login it will track your progress so that you can leave and pick up where you left off later. Also for me it was adictive, and it points out what I need to brush up on (since this is my career I figure I need to stay sharp).
Questions Range from Easy, Medium, and Hard and it is timed when you see your answer choices. There are also some lifelines or as they call them, "Vouchers" that you can use. My Top 10 So Far in 2010
This past year I have spent much time trying to work more efficiently and find excellent solutions for my clients that will not break the bank. In my pursuit I have tested Linux and Windows software. Some have been duds and others have been GOLD. Below you will find my top ten for 2009 and receive David Shoffitt's seal of approval.
XenServer - http://www.citrix.com
Wow. Let me say it again, WOW. Citrix has released a wonderful Virtualization Solution with a robust HyperVisor that allows companys to start a virutalization initiative at NO COST, provided that you have the hardware to run it on.WHen we first started trying it out we ran it on a PC class machine with a Core2Duo at 2.4 GHz. We ran 6 servers on the small computer with no speed problems. We then migrated them to an enterprise class environment. We also converted 2 baremetal machines to virtual in the process all at no cost. Let me say again WOW. We have no need for VMWare at our business because we have a enterprise class solution at again no cost. There are some added features that you can get that cost money like enhanced Storage Link Technologies, and email alerts and notifications, and rapid server provisioning which still would come in at a fraction of the cost of VMWares solutions. Cost :Free
True Crypt - http://www.truecrypt.org
I use this software on my laptop. It works great! I use preboot authentication so that if someone were to steal my laptop they would have to know a password that is well over 20 characters before they could access the files or even boot the computer. My data is safe. You can also create virtual HardDisks on your computer that are encrypted if you just want to encrypt some data but not all data. I recently had corrupted my OS on my computer and was able to plug my HardDrive into another computer to recover my files. The harddrive was not readable until I used the TrueCrypt software on my PC and mounted the drive as an encypted volume and then I was able to read it. Very Powerful product. Cost :Free
Drop Box - http://www.dropbox.com
This is a nice synchronization tool that allows you to synchronize a folder on your computer with other computers over the internet. Very useful! Also it will allow you to go to the website and download your files directly in case you are not around any of your subscribing PCs or laptops. Cost :Free
CloneZilla - http://clonezilla.org/
In my line of work it is almost a daily necessity to take a point in time fully restorable backup of a PC before you potentialy kill it with some update or possible fix to resolve a problem that would require you to rebuild the computer. Well with this software you can reapidly redeploy a computer with its configuration prior to when you formatted it along with all of the partitions that were on the harddrive originally. I like the version based on Ubuntu. Cost :Free
Ultimate Boot CD - http://www.ubcd4win.com/
The Ultimate Boot CD is a must have for any technician. It will empower you to be able to reset the local admin password if you ever forget it. It will also allow you to browse the HardDrive of a computer that is broken and allow you to fix partition tables and even copy files to a network resource or USB Drive. There are many, many more utilities on this disk that are useful for a technician. Cost :Free
RichCopy - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.04.utilityspotlight.aspx
I often have the responsibility of moveing large numbers of files and large amounts of data from location to another and Windows File Copy rarely fits the bill. What I have found is RichCopy which offers a large amount of options so that you can leverage multiple threads to copy more than one file at a time. I love this tool and user atleast once a week! Cost :Free
USB to SATA - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329300&CatId=3770
A wonderful tool that will allow you to hook your SATA or IDE HardDrive of another computer up to your computer via USB without having to open the case of your computer to use it.. Simple tool, great flexibility. Cost :~$20
CD Burner XP - http://cdburnerxp.se/
My favorite CD Burner application. Can burn audio or data. Can make ISOs and burn them too. Everything I need a nice little package. Cost :Free
FileZilla Server - http://filezilla-project.org/
FileZilla is a simple and robust FTP server that allows for Secure Encrypted FTP along with normal FTP. The best thing about this software is that it comes with all the necessary bells and whistles to setup a small business FTP Server. The big feature I would like to see would be Active Directory Lookups or LDAP Authentication. Cost :Free
PrtScr - http://www.fiastarta.com/PrtScr
Nice and easy screen capture utility that allows you to do freeform captures and markups. Cost :Free

Winter Wonderland
Here in Fort Worth we are not too familiar with snow. We usually get one or two days of ice per year and anything more than that is the end of the world. This winter, however, has been somthing of an anomaly. We had the first white Christmas in 83 years. A couple of weeks ago, we had about 12 inches of snow. My daughter and I made a snow girl in the front yard. It was beautiful.
The problem is that we Texans don't know how to handle snow or ice. Everything shut down. Businesses and houses lost their power, schools closed and the city looked likea ghost town. This kind of thing can be devastating for the economy. In my business, managing client's computer networks, we don't have the luxury of taking a snow day. We have clients around the country relying on us to keep their systems running and to provide help desk services no matter what the weather in Fort Worth is doing.
One of the tools that we rely on to work when we can't get to the office is Citrix XenApp. This software lets you run business applications from any computer with an internet connection as if you were sitting in the office. In fact, if it's properly configured, many user's cannot tell that the program isn't running on their local PC. This software is amazing for when you're on the road and you need to access your company's database application. Or perhaps your kid's school called to say your child is sick - with this software you can be just as productive at home as at the office.

Top 5 Security Programs for Home Users
As more and more of our lives move online, protecting our personal information becomes ever more important and ever more of a challenge. Additionally, there are so many different kinds of security risks these days including viruses, malware, spyware, phishing scams, denial of service attacks and many more. And it's only going to get worse as hackers and botnets become more sophisticated.
Fortunately, there are many great security products on the market right now. Personally, I rely on a mixture of security software to keep my computers safe. Each entry on the list performs a different function or blocks a different type of threat, and I'll attempt to explain why each item is important.
Antivirus Software: AVG Antivirus
I have used and recommended AVG antivirus for home and corporate users for several years now. I look for several things when selecting an antivirus solution and the free version of AVG's software for home users hits every item on my list. First, it doesn't slow my computer down unreasonably. Any software that is running is going to slow down a computer some and antivirus software is notoriously bad about this as it has to scan every file that is opened on a pc to make sure it's a safe file. AVG does a good job of scanning the computer but leaving enough processing power that I can continue to work. Second, AVG keeps itself updated. As new viruses are released into the wild on an hourly basis, an antivirus software is only able to protect against the viruses that it knows about. AVG is really good about updating itself automatically with the latest virus database.
AntiSpyware software: Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot is great software for analyzing every file on your computer and detecting unwanted adware of spyware. It's also very good at preventing spyware from being added to your PC. We've probably all seen computers infested with spyware or adware - they usually get internet windows pop up on their screens either at random times or every time you do an internet search. They make computing miserable. It comes with a large database of known spyware or adware and the makers keep it up to date with the latest threats.
AntiMalware software: Malware Bytes
I cannot count the number of times this program has saved me from having to wipe and reload a computer. Malware is a general term for malicious software including viruses, Trojans or worms. Periodically, I'll come across a computer infected with so much malware that is unuseable. In some cases, the computer will boot and work for 5 or 10 minutes and then come to a crawl where the Start button will not even work. In those cases, I turn to MalwareBytes to remove the bad software. It usually is able to resuscitate a compromised PC. You can also install malware bytes on a clean computer and it will run as a background process and prevent malicious software from being installed.
Microsoft Windows Defender
Windows defender is very similar to Spybot or malware bytes. It is a great free product that runs in the background and protects your PC from programs that cause Pop-ups, slowdowns or other security threats.
Firewall software: Comodo Firewall Pro
This software is essential for laptops that connect to public wireless networks. Every time your computer connects to the internet, it is at risk. I read an article years ago that said that a computer with an internet connection and no security software can be compromised in 4 minutes. Most offices or home networks have a router that have a built in firewall that is sufficient to protect your computers. However, if you take your computer away from that firewall, Comodo can fill the void. It scans every packet that comes in to your computer from the internet and blocks the undesirable stuff. It's also really easy to install, which is a major plus for most users.
